<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>W</strong>orking together for the first time the Society of Scottish Artists and CutLog are delighted to present a dedicated space for artist moving image within SSA | VAS OPEN, showcasing the work of 67 artists from the UK, USA, Ireland, France, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Thailand, Norway, Hungary, Israel, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Brazil, Japan, Poland and New Zealand.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">CutLog is a group of artists who have recently come together to create new opportunities for artists whose practice spans moving image. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Following an invitation from the SSA to collaborate, CutLog set out with two main aims: first, to offer artists a genuine chance that their work would be selected in an open call (no works were preselected); and, secondly, to illustrate the wide range of ways artists use the medium of moving image. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">While the panel selected works without reference to country of origin, the medium of moving image does allow works from many countries to be easily shown together and opens exhibitions to a wider international representation.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The works selected range from mobile phone to 4k video recordings, from digitised 8 and 16mm film to animation, and from computer-generated imagery to extreme slow motion. In duration, they range from 17 seconds to 20 minutes. Subjects include the natural world, human conflict and sociopolitical events and involve both individual and group performances. They make use of the written and the spoken word, they harness the power of memory and fantasy, and they invoke identity and absurdity.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Artists working with moving image come from many disciplines, which shifts the focus on to concepts, ideas and aesthetics and the limits of the technology used are explored and expanded. In this exhibition the selected artists have taken their own personal routes through the complexity of life.</span></p>

<p class="font_8"><span><span><span><span>"Soanyway</span> is an independent online magazine, providing a platform for work that tells stories using any combination of words, images and sounds. </span></span></span>The title ‘soanyway’ is an expression used in daily speech to refocus after digression, or as a means of changing or avoiding a subject. The conclusive ‘so’ merged with the ‘anyway’ of alternation suggests a diversity of possible stories in which interdisciplinary boundaries are crossed. This allows these apparent digressions to flow as multi-layered narrative. We interpret story broadly, considering it in relation to fact and fiction, narration or implication, and structure or a lack of it. We also regard most history, theory and critique as the telling of stories about stories". </p>

<p class="font_8">Issue 3 includes two ‘exhibition features’, introducing a further development to the relaunched magazine following Issue 2’s special insert. The intention is to respond to recent exhibitions and events, bringing them into dialogue with submitted works that respond independently to the magazine’s description. Ilana Halperin’s <span>Minerals of New York</span> (Blenheim Walk Gallery, Leeds, 29 March – 9 May 2019 and touring to The Hunterian, Glasgow) considers the possibility of a city’s mineral biography, an interaction between archaeology, geology and the everyday; the unravelling of a city’s narrative through time. William Mackrell’s <span>LipSync</span> series shown in <span>Here is where we meet</span> (Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna, May – 15 June 2019) explores the potential of performance to leave behind a trace of its movement, capturing the fragile process of language; the language which frames and censors our daily expression.<br /><br />A tapestry of objects are woven together in Lauren de Sa Naylor’s text, through the movement of a fragmented narrative which omits people’s names, beginning with an almost empty bottle of wine and ending with empty beer glasses. Everyday objects appear in the paintings of Richard Baker, whose internal framings emphasise the absence of people and movement. The obscured windows of Eta Dahlia’s video poetry invite imaginary figures and objects to fill them with a presence, and considers translation over both language and medium. It questions how much might be communicated via a limited quantity of words and vague images. Kamila Müllerová creates a haunting dialogue between objects, cloth and light, with the occasional appearance of a figure treated as object; and sound is used to unite the images in a literal knot. Figures appear and disappear in the double narrative of Martha Stanford Campbell’s image poetry, emphasising their fragility against the contrasting sturdiness of objects, paralleled by the photographs’ stillness and the words’ movement.</p>
<p class="font_8">Fragility of human presence is also suggested in Jean-Michel Rolland’s time-lapse, where people are noticeably absent from the construction of an urban landscape. Through its process, there is an ambiguity as to its medium: it is uncertain whether the image is painted, drawn or photographed. The play between movement and print is offered by Emily Evans’ construction of a new typeface inspired by dance. Here, motion becomes framed in the shapes of letters, an attempt to place wordless expression into print. There is a similar sense in Pierre Yves Clouin’s ‘found-drawing’, a film almost motionless like a drawing, its sound of a busy road revealing otherwise, and suggests that mundane sights or scenes might be frozen and reworked. In Kerry Baldry’s film, plastic bags are used to package stone deities, archaeological artefacts which appear to breathe with disturbing force within their containers. Such artefacts, minerals and objects are presented as framed and channelled through the endless collection of Google, an everyday means of research which invites both digression and distraction, given a narrative by Marion Menan’s hypnotic scrolling that also echoes Ilana Halperin’s museological research of geological samples.</p>
<p class="font_8">In this issue, there is an interaction between objects and time; between the contrasting steadiness of objects and spaces as people appear and disappear within and around them. With the passing, layering and weaving of time, cities, objects and language tangle people up in their endless narratives. These narratives are a means to capture evidence of living presence, leaving behind frames that invite habitation, and the retelling of stories. <br /><br /><br /></p>
<p class="p1"><em><span class="s1">Le ‘dessin trouvé’ de Pierre Yves Clouin semble aussi [cadrer le mouvement, tenter d’imprimer une expression sans mot]. <p class="p1"><em>"...La solitude du cowboy est aussi exprimée par l’artiste français Pierre Yves Clouin. Enfin… on apprend qu’il s’agit d’un cowboy car le titre nous l’indique: Cowboy (3’17 - 1998). Notre héros n’a ni jean ni cheval, ni chapeau ni chaussures à éperon ni colt. Il est nu, à genoux, face à une fenêtre. En gros plan (le Western adore le gros plan): ses fesses, ses jambes, et donc (si vous vous y connaissez en anatomie masculine) ses testicules pendants. Habituellement, c’est ce que l’on remarque quand on l’œil sous l’arrière d’un cheval. Le héros touche du doigt son matériel, le soupèse, et soulève le tout vers l’avant. On ne voit plus grand chose de ses attributs et de l’action. Peut-être vise-t-il l’horizon, c’est un cowboy tout de même. C’est la fin. Faut tout imaginer. <p>Pour <a title="oodaaq" href="https://www.loeildoodaaq.fr/festival.php" target="_self">Vidéo/Bars 2018, L’Œil d’Oodaaq</a> réitère son partenariat avec Culture Bar-Bars et la ville de Nantes pour proposer un parcours vidéo ponctué d'évènements insolites et de découvertes rythmiques dans cinq bars et lieux de Nantes.<br />De bars en bars, une programmation de vidéos issues du catalogue de l'association présentera une dizaine d'artistes nationaux et internationaux. Pendant la semaine Culture Bar-Bars, des live expérimentaux et des performances artistiques et poétiques agrémenteront ce parcours.<br />Cette année, la rue aussi se met en scène, et devient lieu de projection, avec la diffusion de vidéos en vitrine du coiffeur La Mèche Rebelle.</p>
