Mais celui qui connaîtrait tout, il y a quelque chose qu'il y découvrirait. C'est dire si, une fois de plus, la vieille opposition figuration-abstraction s'y trouve ridiculisée, pulvérisée par la création dans son esence même.<br />Rares sont les jeunes artistes qui ont du style, plus rare encore ceux qui ont un monde, c'est à dire un univers capable de nous offrir à la fois l'émotion des retrouvailles et le frisson des découvertes. Un de ses objectifs consiste, en effet, à favoriser les premières expositions et d'encourager ainsi le travail de prospection des galeries qui prennent le risque de faire découvrir les oeuvres de photographes encore en début de carrière.<br />Corinne Filippi, représentée par la Galerie Marquet de Vasselot, Gilles Maury et Manuella Marques pour leurs expositions à la Galerie Pons, Pierre-Yves Clouin pour une exposition à venir àla Galerie Diane Maniere, réunis l'Hotel d Albret pour le mois de la photo, en sont des témoins exemplaires.<br />Les visiteurs Mois de la Photo pourront ainsi découvrir au siège de la Direction des Affaires Culturelles, 4 projets récents et inedits de photographes ayant bénéficié ces dernières années d'une aide de la Ville: un extrait de la serie L'Eau à Paris,2 grands cibachromes de Corinne Filippi; Table rase, la suite 24 images de Manuella Marques, inspirée de "Paulina 1880', le roman de Pierre-Jean Jouve; les dispositifs photographiques de Gilles Maury; L'lmpossible graveur, la photographe et l'arpenteur, repérage d'images inscrites dans le sol parisien, par Pierre-Yves Clouin.<br />Toutes ces photographies manifestent la volonté d'indépendance de leurs auteurs vis a vis de I'objet photographie, soit par détournement d'image, soit par des tentatives de rapprochement avec d'autres disciplines artistiques.<br />Elles témoignent également, par leur diversité même, de cette pluralité d'expressions volontairement encouragée dans le cadre de I'attribution d'aides, ou la singularité et le caractère expérimental de la recherche sont, avec la qualité du projet, les premiers facteurs pris en compte.<br />Pierre-Yves Clouin A trente-six ans, le peintre Pierre-Yves Clouin vient faire un détour par la photographie auvc la complicité, pour les prises de vue, de Ghania Rabhi, photographe reporter. Mais ce détour est fait de connivence, de coïncidence entre une rechercht picturale visionnaire et un repérage du réel pour enfoire surgir des formcs étranges. La Galerie Diane Maniire publie cette année avec l'aide de la Direction des Affaires Culturelles, les photographies de Pierce-Yves Clouin eI Ghania Rabhi dans un ouvrage intitulé "L'impossible graveur, la photographe et I'arpenteur".<br />OEUVRES EXPOSEES:<br />L'impossible graveur, la photographe et I'arpenteur Paris,1991-1992 12 tirages photographiques noir et blanc<br />Le sujet de cette série en noir et blanc est I'oeuvre graphique d'un anonyme, d'un artiste qui n'existe pas, d'un "impossible graveur", mais dont I'euvre, elle, est omniprésente sous nos pieds, à Paris. Pierre-Yves Clouin, à la manière de I'arpenteur, a entrepris de suivre les traces qu'il a découvertes sur le sol, inscrites dans les bandes piétonnes qui guident nos déplacements. C'est la constitution de cet inventaire visuel que retracent ces photos-témoins, ces photos-fictions.<br />"Le tableau couché sur la table, à force de ne pas aller rechercher le poil égaré dans l'huile mais d'en faire mon beurre, d aimer y voir tomber le bout d'une cendre de ma cigarette pour qu'y emerge un continent ou une vapeur, bien fini par garder la-dessus un air penché. Ma nuque a pris des habitudes et donc rien de curieux à s'attarder un peu trop longtemps, au passage, sur une main toute aussi gorgone que salade, si justement gravée noir sur blanc dans la bande pietonne. L'envie de titrer ces gravures, partout dans Paris, d'en faire mes fétiches, d'en caresser la découverte, bref d'en faire une attitude, n'a pas r6siste au cruel et lent travail de l'anonyme, que j'ai appelé l'lmpossible Graveur'. L'arpenteur. Pierre-Yves Clouin<br /><strong>Catalogue Mois de la photo 1992<br /></strong>Hotel d'Albret<br />Cette exposition présente des travaux inédits de jeunes artistes choisis parmi ceux qui ont bénéficié, ces dernières années, du soutien de la Direction des Affaires Culturelles de la Ville de Paris (Département des Arts Plastiques).<br />L'Elément liquide comme vecteur d'imaginaire est au coeur de la série de Corinne Filippi intitulée l'Eau et Paris. La matière instable. les combinaisons infinies avec la lumière et les incertitudes de l’élément liquide dans ses nombreux états sont propices à la figuration d'espaces et d'effets oniriques, jusqu'à y reconnaitre l'élément opposé: le feu.<br />Le verre est le support de predilection de Gilles Maury, qui mêle fond et forme, empreinte et matrice, sculpture et photographie, en donnant à celle-ci la profondeur qui lui fait tant défaut. ll impressionne des marbres et des bas - reliefs, archetypes de notre patrimoine insérés dans des objets métalliques, antiques, sur des plaques de verre symboles de la modernité.<br />Pierre- Yves Clouin et Ghania Rabhi se sont constitués ”arpenteurs”d'une oeuvre sans auteur que constitue la signalétique peinte au sol des quelque sept mille avenues, boulevards et rues qui se croisent à Paris. lls s'en sont approchés jusqu'àl'obtention d'une esthétique comparable àcelle de la gravure, aboutissant à une perte totale du référent.<br />Manuella Marques présente une série de photographies réalisée en hommage au roman Paulina 1880 de Pierre- Jean Jouve. La passion, au coeur de l'euvre littéraire, est matérialisée par le feu qui, à la fois générateur de lumière et de ténèbre, est intimement lié à I'alchimie de la photographie.</p>

Pierre Yves Clouin: photos (1991-1993) <br /><br />D’un cadre, sa transparence, et la matérialisation du regard qu’il suscite. Clouin photographie horizontalement des fragments de passage piétons lors de ses déambulations à Paris. Focalisés sur le détail, ces clichés noir et blanc apparaissent parfois comme des gravures abstraites, des fossiles ou des cellules vues au microscopes. <p>Le piéton erre en aveugle, il marche dans l'image. Une scène “Il sottosuolo di ROMA e imprevedibile.” Au bout d'un tunnel du métro en chantier, juste sous la via Appia, le contremaître détecte une poche d'air dans ce qui devrait être la terre. Deux ouvriers manoeuvrent une excavatrice qui perfore délicatement de ces dents la paroi de la grotte attendue. Echappant à la boue et au bruit, à la suite d'un ouvrier, toute l'équipe de tournage du film s'introduit dans le trou pratiqué là. Le silence maintenant, une torche électrique et l'opérateur qui murmure<br />"une maison romaine... Ça a deux mille ans."<br />Dans la salle le petit groupe s'approche des fresques. Le faisceau lumineux d'une lampe balaie les portraits d'une maisonnée patricienne représentée ici en pied.<br />- "Michele! regarde ces têtes!" dit la script en se reconnaissant sur la fresque.<br />Aussi immobiles, les visiteurs s'observent avec ravissement, tous peints là, comme dans un miroir.<br />"Que se passe-t-il?" Lentement mais sûrement, une patine blanche envahie les visages jusqu'à recouvrir en entier les portraits. L'air extérieur? Un champignon, un désastre, un voile blanc mange les fresques.<br />La jeune femme colle ses mains sur la peinture pour arrêter sa disparition. Elle pleure. . .<br />Ainsi se termine la 28ème scène du "Roma" de F. Fellini. <br />Un arpenteur piétine sa fatigue tête baissée, il traverse la rue Yves Toudic et marche sagement dans les bandes. Il y a une main par terre. Le feu passe au vert. Il est déjà sur le trottoir d'en face quand la trace lui reste gravée dans la tête, presque sur le front. Demi tour pour revoir. Planté là, au milieu de la chaussée, il fait mine de se pencher, mais de crainte de trop attirer l'attention, s'interrompt. Ainsi, à la dérobée entre les pas, bousculé, il ne la quitte pas des yeux. Si c'est une main, elle est de partout gibbositée et les doigts sont fourchés.(1)<br />Maintenant l'arpenteur veut appeler à l'aide. Mais au lieu de dire : "où sommes nous ?” , il pense : "dites moi ce que c'est?" et se tait . Mais c'est un organisme parfait qui est dessiné ici, une salade déchirée ou une tête de méduse cachée par ses serpents dont l'un d'entre eux ouvre une grande gueule.<br />"Quand je comprends pas je passe" dit effrontément l'arpenteur dans un murmure. Et puis c'est si facile de négliger où on met les pieds qu'il ne va pas se priver de rentrer, le nez en l'air comme tout le monde. Un peu plus loin Boulevard Jules Ferry, il traverse en suivant un chien et accroche une grenouille (2) .<br />Il passe en l'évitant mais tourne la tête pour ne pas la perdre de vue. De ce coté c'est une aile avec un arbre dessus. A moins que ce ne soit encore autre chose, puisque ça bouge sans faire un mouvement. Comme personne n'a jamais rien remarqué d'anormal juste à la surface de nos chaussées de jour comme de nuit, il faut croire que les agissements du type qui, à Paris, se déchaîne à graver des laitues aux carrefours, restent invisibles. Celui là n'a pas choisi le meilleur moyen de montrer ces oeuvres, on marche dessus impunément. C'est invendable, le maire ne serait pas d'accord. Il ne veux manifestement pas faire carrière, c'est ininstallable dans un musée et de toute façon il y en a partout.<br />C'est qu'il s'est dispersé l'impertinent, son musée c'est la ville dès qu'il y a deux rues qui se croisent. Ce type est impossible.<br />La bande préfabriquée est encollée par terre avec de grands chalumeaux, il suffit d'un rien : la bande trop chaude ou la chaussée trop froide, que la terre est un peu tremblée ou que le temps tourne à l'humide pour que naisse l'irrégularité dans laquelle se gravera l'image. Il suffit d'un rien mais il en faut beaucoup.<br />L'impossible graveur a choisi l’alchimie : il utilise ici la bande comme linceul, la terre qui remonte pour stigmate, le feu entre asphalte et bande, le temps qui prolonge les fissures, et l'air, l'air sur laquelle il souffle pour que tout ça s'emboîte. Devant ce pansement mal ou justement trop bien collé, il attend la première voiture qui arrache les débris de ce défaut. Nos petits pas finiront de lustrer ses vestiges. Ce qui est apparu disparaîtra. Une fort juste velléité de propreté pousse les autorités à remplacer ce qui est usé.<br />Le blanc immaculé restant l'emblème pour beaucoup du décrassé, les gravures sont régulièrement recouvertes par d'autres bandes neuves, ce qui augure au mieux de futures interventions de notre impossible graveur, (on l'appellera l'IG) ou pire repeintes, ce qui ne donne rien. Bref l'ouvrage est éphémère. Les larmes ont rarement aidé à y regarder de plus près. Il est, tant qu'il est encore temps, c'est vrai, tentant de relever tout ça. Relever ce qui est inscrit à terre peut être fait par un frottage simple sur un papier ou en calquant la trace qui serait ainsi reproduite dans sa dimension.<br />Dans l'incapacité d'arrêter toute circulation, l'arpenteur s'abstient de frotter ces bandes savamment. Il fait appel à la photographe qui, entre deux feux s'il y en a, opérera rapidement alors qu'il surveille l'éventuelle venue d'un véhicule menaçant. L'Arpenteur embrasse d'un coup d'oeil un nuage en transformation sous l'effet du vent. Il y distingue un visage dont les contours s'évaporent.<br />Pour peu qu'un oeil voisin se pose sur le même objet, l'échange de vue peut se résumer ainsi : - "Regarde cette tête qui devient ..." - "Ce n'est pas une tête c'est une licorne!" L'Arpenteur vigilant saisira en un instant la licorne tout en perdant la tête. Frustré pourtant il la cherchera partout, avec une concentration doublée sans jamais la retrouver, le vent le lui a soufflée. Appelé par sa propre surprise à partager son regard, la sèche désignation d'une autre vision répondant à la sienne l'aura piègé.<br />A ces deux yeux voisins l'image était commune et pourtant dissemblante, l'invitation passant par le même trou dans nos esprits, la même cavité fantôme mais pas pour les même expéditions. Ainsi l'arpenteur s'irrite-t-il quand devant une gravure d'IG un oeil récalcitrant y discerne une carte parcheminée alors que lui, y voyait un benêt en bonnet. Mais ici, l'autre oeil ayant vidé son sac, l'arpenteur pourra en douce, sans insister, aller retrouver son benêt.(3) Mais, un benêt peut avoir une tête de carte et vue du ciel, un pays ressembler à un bonnet, comme une salade fraîche à l'étalage figurer la tête tranchée très chevelue et verte de peur de la Gorgone.Les deux contemplateurs vacillent dans l'instant sur un même désirs de grâce.<br />L'impossible graveur a piégé le mot. L'IG utilise souvent la chaussée noire comme sol et la bande comme ciel pour y graver une procession (4) , un envol d'anges, de larges bols (5) parfois retournés sur la table. Il se joue de la perspective en couchant un mouton aux yeux bandés sur une falaise, au bord de l'asphalte qu'il fait précipice. (6) On retrouve les mêmes êtres ficelés, emmaillotés dans une bande et penchant, frileux comme des roseaux dans une autre, ici un saint en lévitation, (7) oblongs insectes dans leurs cocons transparents ou furieusement tordus dans une tourmente de fumée. Il avait installé *un buste féminin tourné vers l'est presque au centre de la place de la République,(8) profil discret, (8 cm de haut) mais décidé.<br />*Il avait...installé, car cette petite dame est morte durant l’été 91, quand asphaltes et bandes furent refaits à neuf pour honorer cette autre femme, au milieu, qu’on avait restaurée. Notre IG connaît son histoire. Il fait du collage : il dresse un pédoncule métallique - une clé ? - dans un dépassement incurvé à moins qu'il n'organise celui-ci ensuite autour de celui-là.(9) Il plante ailleurs un filament argenté dans un obscur bourgeonnement.(10) <br />S'il avait un visage, son autoportrait serait peut être ce Fantômas accablé au carrefour Fbg du Temple rue de Malte où traînent dès 1 heure tapante du matin quelques hardrockers embierrés au sortir du Gibus. (11) Mais l'IG n'a ni minois, ni histoire, ni voix, son anonymat nous conduit, dressés dans le noir, sans précaution, sans repère, au bord du blanc où nous sommes uniquement les victimes d'une présence.<br />A cette heure, ça vaut un pied de nez à nos illustres installateurs-citationnistes, propres gardiens fervents de leurs captivants itinéraires.<br />Si l'IG voulait semer le trouble, il n'agirait pas autrement quand il lâche ces successions de flèches pas toujours dans le sens de la circulation. Il a le goût du risque de nos vies quand il grave sur toutes les bandes de lignes axiales de la rue du Fbg Montmartre entre le Bd Poissonnière et la rue Lafayette. Défile, là, un film habité de curieux tableaux.<br />Ces deux trois fissures qui accompagnent le déplacement de la queue d'ombre d'un volatile qui atterrit, le dos chargé de montagnes sont posés aussi sûrement que les plis de la peau sur un coude, le bras tendu. Rester à distance suffisante pour hésiter à reconnaître dans la trace d'un accident, la cicatrice sur le mollet où l'on s'attarde ou une vallée des rois à explorer si l'on s'approche encore, c'est garder cet instable équilibre ou l'on se sent rougir quand simplement le désir brusque vous flambe, c'est ne pas céder trop vite à l'appétit qui s'erige, c'est, monsieur le douanier, encore nous retenir et nous laisser trois secondes à saliver tant et tant que la bouche devient ce tiède cloaque où tout chavirera enfin.<br />L'oiseau... là (12), est-il guidé par le bras de cette asperge raide adossée à une dune, une bande plus loin? L’Arpenteur, si fier de ses découvertes, se désespère de ne plus toujours retrouver ces gravures happées parfois par le blanc quelques mois plus tard. Il avait arbitrairement décidé de celles à guarder et de celles à jeter, partant du péremptoire principe qu’il faut pour l’IG, comme pour les autres, beaucoup rater pour parfois réussir.<br />L’Arpenteur s’aperçu que des gravures qu’il avait d’abords trouvées négligeables et brouillonnes, sans la maturité prétendait-il, de celles qu’il avait alors privilégiées, se montraient à son oeil enfin plus exercé à l’art de l’IG, autrement tumultueuses que ses premières images chéries, fétiches qu’il avait finis par vénérer au point d’en titrer certains.<br />Frémissant alors de les nommer, l’arpenteur roulait furieusement des yeux qu’il figeait sur son délicat intérieur dont il comparait la richesse à un IG puisque sur les 2, le coup d’oeil reste égal... Déduction faite, son comportement devenait chef d’oeuvre , les gravures d’IG sommées de comparaître au bénéfice de son attitude. La dessus l’IG se vengea. Ainsi, à la seconde visite, 6 mois plus tard, ce volatile où l’arpenteur s’attarda tant, a perdu son organe de plumes noires qui frétillait.(13)<br />On nous laisse heureusement,les montagnes en lévitation. L’insoment IG nargue t-il l’arpenteur en lui suggérant que pour qu’un dos plane avec une chaîne dessus, enfin définitivement dans l’azur, il faut que la bestiole perde sa queue ? En tous les cas, l’asperge 2 mètres plus loin, qui elle-mystère- n’a pas bougé, bien qu’elle prêta main forte à l’atterrissage, reste bête parce qu’intacte dans son geste. (14) L’Arpenteur en a pris pour son grade et à défaut de poser, le témoignage déposera. La paire de lorgnons noirs qui flotte (15) sert elle à observer la feuille de trèfle(16) ou ce croissant de lune mangé par un serpent sorti de terre dans la nuit blanche? (17) Cette fois il dépasse les marges et construit des proues avancées dans l’abîme (18) et l’œil de l'arpenteur, flottant, greffé pourtant à 1m64 tête penchée, quand il vise à ces pieds, se vasodilate et bave, prêt à assouvir un plaisir inconnu.s Démesurément, 3 bêtes s’allongent au dessus d’un ravin, une quatrième fait le pont.(19,20, 21 et,22) L'IG a parfois des sautes d'humeur suicidaire : il donne un coup de pied dans la bande (23) , en face du Louvre. Il pète une bombe, là où la rue de la Verrerie croise la rue du Renard.(24)<br />En freinant au carrefour, les roues impriment de longues traînées grises qui s'intègrent aux paysages tels des nuées de brouillard de passage.(31) Dans un même mépris, poussières, déchets et excréments maculent sans vergogne les travaux de l'IG. Qu'il bruine et une fine boue y laisse la confusion. Qu'il tombe des cordes et tout redevient lisible, que les lampadaires s'allument et les animales salades soeurs, qu'affectionne tant ce monomaniaque, saillent contrastées et lumineuses...A Paris, il pleut. Ce qui évite à l'arpenteur de lécher. <br />A propos de la scène : Il aura fallu quoi? une goutte, un demi, un siècle? pour que soudain, après un clin d'oeil, une fresque trois fois millénaire ne se dissolve. Si peu de temps pour que les visiteurs ne distinguent plus chez ces autres, ces étrangers apparus, que leurs propres visages. Il n'est plus d'intérêt que le spectateur, assurent nos doux gloseurs ils nous le certifient : eux même s'y voyaient, donc ce n'était qu'un miroir. Nous voilà rassurés. Forcément concernés, la belle affaire, par leur image, ils peuvent affirmer : “Ca nous regarde!” sans être regardé.<br />Le flot de mots qui les relie, c’est la bataille des pieds vélocipèdant dans la mer pour guarder la tête hors de l’eau, se voir encore dans le reflet sans y plonger jamais. Du coup, le tiède océan sent l’oeuf battu. C’est une crème où ils ne mettront ni le mufle, ni la bouche. Elle en séchera. Mais: “Regarde comme cette chose -nous- regarde.” est le fil sans appât, tendu entre l’image et la stature bizarre que nous avons, debouts. -Par quelle infirmité, n'étaient-ils fichus que de seulement s’y reconnaître? ose avancer l'impossible graveur. - Fi du mystère puisque c'est nos têtes que nous voyons dans ces portraits et si nous les y voyons, c'est qu'elles y sont! Finis ces intimes cataclysmes posés avec une délicatesse dérisoire sur l'inconnu.<br />Seulement ce commentaire : L'autre n'est plus un chemin d'énigmes, il n'est que projection! Nos petits moi, ainsi propriétaires, si joliment blottis dans leur creux, peuvent sommeiller.” dans un chuchotement: “C’est le désir que nos mots et l’insulte aident, elle me plaît et te rassure. Dis la moi et je m’y soumettrai comme tu te soumets aux pouvoirs qu’alors tu inventes. Nous pourrons en travaillant ce laborieux babillage atteindre le vertigineux souvenirs de ce point d’innocence, mère de toutes les fatigues où, réglés, il nous faudra impérativement dormir, sans les limbes.” et en élevant la voix : “Nous ne reconnaîtrons qu'objet où se mirer.<br />L'art est mort et tout est bientôt à sa place.” rétorquent nos utopistes, définitifs. Partant pour l'enterrer, et réveillés pourtant, on a marché sur de sombres ruines dans des draps blancs, là où on l'attendait pas voilà l'autre qui repointe son nez, à nos pieds, pas exposable comme un porte bouteille, mais tout prêt pareil sorti d'usine. - Il connait son époque l' IG - Ça ne ressemble à rien sinon à une invitation à se perdre ici, comme on visiterait le centre de la terre, en entrant par les volcans en éruption. Nous nous immergeons en cet unique point d’huile qui révèle à la peau sa fissure et dans l’oeil un éclair, puis aux regards nos failles quand elle devient lisse. Là où l’air même n’est plus que le respect des souffles. Vidés, semble-t-il fourbus, nous nous collerons, étonnés du miracle affolant qui dure, qui dure de la dureté de notre étonnement.<br />L'Arpenteur, PY.CLOUIN</p>

<p>The first time I saw Pierre Yves Clouin's video work was in 1997 when I was the programming coordinator for MIXNYC: The New York Experimental Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.<br />I was immediately seduced by his work because of how he used the specificity of the video medium: it's intimacy and framing that lends itself so well to voyeurism. He also displayed a playful sensitivity in his depiction of masculinity.<br />But most of all, I was impressed by the strong brevity of his statements.<br />When someone can convey a multitude of ideas that some people use the feature length format for, in a 2-minute long video - that's pretty amazing.<br />Sitting in the dark and watching <a title="CUL EN L'AIR" href="http://pierreyvesclouin.fr/items/show/103" target="_self">Cul en l'air</a> and <a title="THE FINAL TOUCH" href="http://pierreyvesclouin.fr/items/show/83" target="_self">The Final Touch</a> I had a moment with myself.<br />The type of moment where my thoughts were provoked by the representation of his body, the identification I had as a spectator with this intimate moment and then the surprise by how I was pleasantly manipulated to believe I was seeing one thing, when I was in fact, looking askew.<br />This looking askew is something that traverses all of his work. You'll notice that his work can easily be divided: very short pieces about the body, the gaze and objectification and on the other hand, longer pieces about public vs. private.<br />But over and over again Pierre Yves shows us that as viewers we have become lazy with the way we understand perspective in our spectatorship.<br />Whether he is playing with the framing and eroticisation of the male body or showing us a succession of seemingly random images of the public with intimate voiceovers, Pierre Yves manipulates our viewing expectations.<br />— <a title="maïa cybelle carpenter" href="http://www.mccarpenter.net/program4.html" target="_self">Maïa Cybelle Carpenter</a> , San Francisco Cinematheque</p>

Although this neglected stepchild of independent cinema conjures images of gritty film stock, atonal music and non-linear or non-existent plot, it is a category of filmmaking in which many innovations start and creativity blooms, unfettered by commercial pressures or the glare of publicity.
